Research and Planning: Shooting Schedule Completed

Filming within my group has officially been completed! It has taken us from Friday evening until this morning, I feel now we have filmed enough to create our teaser trailer. My group and I have certainly pulled our weights and worked well as a team, all we need to do now, is get our tasks for the trailer completed.

Research and Planning: Shot List

Research and Planning: Actors Release forms

Brendon, Laura, Anika and I have signed a Actors Release form, to prove we have had an agreement to film for our trailer.

Planning and Research: Shooting Schedule review..

After this successful weekend of filming, Friday and Sundays film schedule, today has not gone quite to plan, so we are forwarding our Mondays filming to Wednesday, where we will get the filming completed.

Research and Planning: My Plan for next the week..

My plan for the next upcoming week is to have the filming done by mondays media session, also by mondays lesson have my entire blog up to date, ive caught up on a few posts and neatened them up, but there is still some posts that havent been finished, but i hope to have everything done by monday! once that is done, we will begin the editing but as that is Laura's main priority within our group she will be doing the majority of it, with help from Anika and I. Also as our group only consits of 3 people, with myself doing Mise-en-scene, Anika doing Cinematography, and Laura doing Editing, that leaves the Sound to be done for all 3 of us, so we will do some tests next monday dinner time, and hopefully have our choices done for when we have edited our trailer.

Research and Planning: Auditions

This is a Audition list i uploaded to facebook, to get more people involved within my filming, alot of people werent to interested but atleast it spread the word and has helped me and my group decide on who will be in our teaser trailer.

Research and Planning: Group Meeting

Today Anika and I completed our final draft of our Storyboard. We have decided on deadline filming dates of the 10th, 12th and 13th of this month, so within the next week, we will have to film with or without Laura now as our deadline is approaching fast. I feel that Anika and I can get this filming done, but hopefully Laura will be apart of it. I will do props and costume list for what we need to film and let Anika and Laura know what they should bring and wear, and I will do make-up aswell.

Research and Planning: Shooting Schedule

These are the dates and times that me and Anika have agreed on and plan on filming, due to Laura's absence she may not be able to film, but as we have a deadline Anika and I have agreed to these days! Hopefully we get the filming done for this session next week for definite, and the editing transitions can begin.

Research and planning: Costumes and props list

ANIKA'S COSTUME
General casual clothing, nothing to over the top, but nothing too simple..
  • Head scarf
  • pink jacket
  • jeans
  • black pumps
  • bag
I decided to keep Anika's clothing casual as she is only in the beginning of the Trailer, not much scary action happens then.

LAURA'S COSTUME
Something that perhaps could be ruined, but still keeping it casual..
  • Warm coat
  • Tights
  • Boots
I decided on keeping it very damsel in distress and stereotypical if she is wearing girly tights and boots, as she plays a girl lost scared and hurt.

BECKY'S COSTUME(ME)
Again.. something that can easily be ruined, but still casual..
  • Leggings
  • Boots
  • Jumper
  • WarmJacket
Again like Laura's costume i decided to be stereotypical girly, it looks more victimizing if the girl is dressed a lot more girly than if she was to wear trackie bottoms and a hoody.

BRENDON'S COSTUME
Quite cool and casual, like the geek sheek look.
  • glasses
  • comb over hair
  • jeans
  • t-shirt
With Brendon being our "killer" guy, we need him to have the geek look but also seem like there is a cool other side to him, keeping him suspicious..

Research and planning: Auditionies

Anika, Laura and I held auditions for people to be featured in our film, we ended up deciding to go with Laura and I as we study drama at A2 , and to feature Anika in the beginning bit then all 3 of us have helped being in the film and with the filming. Also Meg Steph and Brendon from our media group have accepted the roles of featuring in our Teaser Trailer. Here are the pictures of the people that are starring in our trailer: -

Here are the pictures of the people that weren't quite right to be featured in our film: -

Research and Planning: Risk assessments

Research and Planning: Location recces

This location recces is for staircase, unfortunately you can not see the 'spooky staircase' as it is covered by trees, but I have filmed the location and will post that in another post.

The location recces is when we filmed about in college, i just got a birds eye view image of the building rather than different images of the college plotted about.

Research and Planning: Group Meeting

Today we arranged to come together as a group and re-think our whole entire film teaser trailer. So Anika and I decided to scrap the idea and name we had and start afresh. We have a brand new plot and storyline and a Brand New Title, which I came up of which is 'Silhouette. I will sketch out a new storyboard and upload a new blog about it tomorrow. Hopefully if we stick to our plan we can start filming our teaser trailer next Friday afternoon/night.

Research and Planning: Magazine Analysis

film?
You can tell this a film magazine, with the masthead of the magazine being: Total Film.
Also, the images selected, are images out of recent films in the media at the moment.

The layout is a typical magazine, but also typical for film magazine. With the main story in the middle, and masthead at the top with the main image overlapping it, and more stories and images about the page.
audience?
The target audience for this film magazine is, id say boys mostly, with the main feature being Sherlock Holmes.. and the main colours being blue. Also people who are film geeks and critics, by geeks i mean people who watch a lot of films.
genre?
The genre of this film, is by the looks of the colours, looks like the film is quite mysterious and dark, but knowing Sherlock Holmes, its a detective film.

You can tell this a film magazine, with the masthead of the magazine being: Total Film.
Also, the images selected, are image used is out of a recent top blockbuster film.

The layout is a typical magazine, but also typical for film magazine. With the main story in the middle, and masthead at the top with the main image overlapping it, but also the background, is the background of the films image.
audience?
The target audience for this film magazine is, id say boys mostly, with skeleton faces, and guns, a lot of fight involved. Also like the other magazine, film critics, and geeks.
genre?
The genre of this film, by the use of colours and imagery with the background, id say its a violence film again with skeletons and weaponry.

Research and Planning: Equipment and Software list

The Equipment and Software that we will be using throughout the creating nd making process are:
    • iMovie
    • Final Cut Express
    • Garage Band
    • Tripods
    • Camcorders
    • Digital Cameras
    • Microphones
    • Lighting
    • Photoshop -for the poster design.
    • Prezzi

    Research and planning: Storyboard

These are diagrams of the Storyboard we have so far from our team discussion. The story is, 3 girls come out of the cinema, and 1 of the girls ex's is outside waiting for her with 1 of his friend. He then texts another friend saying 'still up for scaring my ex so she gets back with me' and all is going according to plan, the 5 of them then take a shortcut home through the woods, and that's when the lad starts scaring the ex girlfriend, but he doesnt just jump out with a mask and shouts boo, he slowly kidnaps each girl 1 by 1 killing them so the ex is on her own then starts chasing her and the ex boyfriend and kills them both at the end. Also on one of the lessons i missed due to a Hospital Appointment my group came up with the name of 'Masquerade' but when I thought of masquerade I didn't automatically think shock Horror film, I thought of a chick flick as its like a dance at a Ball.

As confusing as this story sounds its a first draft, I personally don't like the storyline we have come up with so I've called a group meeting to discuss changing the plot/storyline also to re-change the Title.

Research and Planning: Analysis of a film poster

     Genre:
    • The Genre for this poster is Horror, with the use of color, a dark black background and bold red text, keeping it simple.
    • Also the use of the image and the scared face kind of gives it away that its a scary horror.
    Narrative:
    • The narrative included on this poster, explains that its directed by the same director who did the scary film of "The hills have eyes"
    • Also who the actors are, when its released and of course what the film is called.. 'MIRRORS'
    Representation:
    • The only person represented within this film is a typical 'damsel in distress' character a girl screaming with tears in her eyes.
    Media Language:
    • The media language is mostly informing you about the director and actors.
    Layout:
    • The layout is a typical film poster, with a main featured image the title clear enough to stand out, basic information of actors and directors.
    Audience:
    • The target audience for this film, is late teenagers early 20's, with socioeconomic groups such as working class backgrounds.

Research and Planning: Plan for next week

This is a PLAN that I will stick to and hopefully have completed by this lesson next week...

Over the past two weeks, i have spent my time in Hospital, and with no access to the internet and with the treatment I was on, I have fallen behind in my coursework within college, most importantly on my media blog which is dated everyday with new blogs. This is why my blog has a lot of posts, posted on the same day.

So my plan for this week is to finish all of the uncompleted posted blogs, and also start my research and blogging everyday, once I've caught up with everyone it will give me more time to focus on the task that is at hand.. Creating the HORROR TEASER TRAILER.

    Research and Planning: Micro element

Within the making of creating our Horror teaser trailer, the micro element I am focusing on is Mise-en-scene, we are also sharing the responsibility for sound.
For Mise-en-scene i will be looking at:
    • Setting
    • Props
    • Costumes
    • Make-up
    • Colour
    • Lighting
    • Composition

    Planning and Research: Production Meeting

Today our group, consistinf of Laura Anika and I, have discussed the roles and storyline we will be using as our Horror Trailer.

Anika is doing Cinematography, Laura is doing Editing, im doing Mise en scene together we are doing sound.

The story is two female best friends, coming out of college and bumping into one of the girls ex's, who is still madly obsessively in love with her, but he knew she'd be at the cinema and whilst he was with his best friend, he asked another friend to scare her so she'd see he was the 'Knight in shining Armour' but things didn't go quite to plan and everything goes out of proportion

Story board, clip by clip, shot by shot blah blah..

    Research and Planning: The Treatment

My idea for a Horror teaser trailer..

Most of my ideas link themselves to being followed stalked or watched.
I think we should have something where we feel we are being watched but not only that, being watched by someone we know, because of jelousy.
For example a girls hatred for another and she stalks and kills, to become the popular girl.
Or one girl jelous of another because of her brains as she realizes she doesnt know anything and knows shes going no where in life.

Another simple idea, is where a weird person who lives in the middle of nowhere, and likes to be alone with the animals at night going all weird, and a group of teenagers camp out at a field nearby lose reception and get separated into pairs of 2 girls and 2 boys and one by one slowly get tortured and killed.

    Research and Planning: Sound test

During this lesson with Deana, we each got put into pairs to create a a music theme to go with a specific genre on Garage Band. I got paired with Brendon and together we created a fantasy of our own, where we created the music from scratch on Garage Band, we also recorded our voices and changed the pitch, it was a lot of fun and helped me feel more comfortable in using the software.

Research and Planning: My Preferred Audience

The Target Audience for my Teaser Trailer, are 16 to 25 year olds.Because with my questionnaire results no-one over 25 said yes to Horror being their favourite genre.

But not everyone had Horror as their first choice. Even though the audience is 16 year olds who wouldn't be able to actually watch the film as it is an 18. But it doesnt mean they still cant enjoy the Teaser Trailer.

Typical socio-economic groups that'd watch the Horror Teaser Trailer

Research and Planning: Codes and Conventions of a Teaser Trailer

Out of all the options, we have decided to create a Teaser Trailer. This is a step up from making the music magazines last year.

The definition of a Teaser Trailer is that it shows you highlights of a brand new film but also teases you into making you watch the film. As it shows you a twisting story plot within the minute and a half long clip you see.

This Teaser Trailer is something along the lines of what we could achieve. But with using something paranormal i would love to do a lot more filming outside of the house, and go to different locations, and get a sense of a scarier scenery for the audience!

This trailer is something like along the lines that I would do, but not so much a bible back grounded one, because we would need a lot of effects and knowledge about exorcism, but the thrill it gives to the audience when watching is the reaction I want for my audience!

This is more of a killing horror, which would be more do able for our college teaser trailer. I like the idea of there being a twist with in the murdering or a deep story.

    HORROR GENRE
    1. Damsel in distress
    2. Screams from people in hurt/scared
    3. Blood cuts or steins
    4. Weapons, a killer in itself
    5. bad guy
    6. something abnormally scary
    7. twisted plot
    8. dark and scary setting

    Planning and Research: Theories

Here are some Theories that I have researched surrounding Audience responses.

    The Hypodermic Syringe Model
The theory that it has a direct and powerful impact on the audience, goes straight into their minds.

    Cultivation Theory
A social theory which examines the long-term effect of television on the audience.

    Desensitisation Theory
People are less effected by what they are exposed to such as; violence, sex and drugs.

    Copy Cat Model
The theory that people watch films/programs and copy them.

    Uses and Gratifications Theory
The idea that we only intake information from the media that we want, not what we are forced into.

    Planning and Research: Trailer Analysis

    Genre:
    • The Genre of this teaser trailer is a horror. This is quite clearly shown with the use of dramatic scary music, the dark camera shots, the angles, and with all the shots flashing from one to another so quick that it makes you jump.
    Narrative:
    • There isn't much narrative in this trailer clip, but the narrative isn't necessary as its more about watching what happens, and noticing something on a shot, rather than listening to someone explain, it creates more of a scary tension.
    Audience:
    • This trailer interacts with the audience more than others, as there is a clip of an audience getting scared and a question aimed at us the audience saying "In 2009 you demanded it".
    • The target audience for this film is late teenagers and young adults, as its a 15, teenagers will be more interested into watching it, as they are old enough to get into the film, also not a lot of older people will find it appealing to them.
    • I think mixed gendered people will watch this, I can see more boys than girls watching it, as I believe that most girls would find it too scary, but myself being a girl and a big fan of Horrors this was right up my street.
    • Lifestyle and socioeconomic groups this applies to is, working class people, not your upper class.
    Representation:
    • In this trailer, the characters represented are a typical family in a family home, but within the trailer, a silhouette image of a "devil" like woman is over powering a baby and a dog, and also pushes a large male towards a camera.
    • Within this horror, typical character roles are not portrayed as there is no damsel in distress, but a male in distress if you like as it is an overpowered woman as the main role.
    Media Language:
    • The mise-en-scene of this trailer is strictly filmed within one location, a house. Such a simple location where everybody and anybody could film, but takes an imaginative mind to make something so creative.
    • The editing of this trailer is good, as it flicks from one shot to another, and as the film is about having video camera around the house to watch for anything scary, and the editing techniques used, are fuzzy TV clips, to hook you in more.
    • The cinematography is strictly limited in this film, as its suppost to look as realistic as possible, with the cameras being placed around the house in top corners of the room, that's all the angles you can see from, but it also is like your looking down on the "devil" from heaven.
    • The diegetic sound involved in this clip is the noises you can see coming off of the characters, such as when the male gets thrown towards the camera and it falls you hear the bang, also when the dog barks.
    • The non-diegetic sound is the scary music and the fuzzy TV noises.

    Genre:
    • The Genre for this teaser trailer is Horror, you can tell this as the high pitch fast pacing music builds up tension throughout this trailer, and the flashing images of different shots within the film, shows that its a horror.
    Narrative:
    • The only narrative within this trailer is a scream from a typical damsel in distress at the end of the teaser trailer.
    Audience:
    • I think the target audience for this trailer, is 18 year old's up to early 30's, because this trailer is an 18, most teenagers aged like 14 15, will no they are too young to watch therefore might not appeal to them as much as a 15 horror, and i believe it  could be for most adults up to early 30's as it a psychological film and gets you thinking, you have to watch everything to understand, so no hiding behind a pillow.
    • I believe mixed gendered people will watch this film but with this film I believe A LOT more lads would prefer this type of horror than girls, as its more gory, and has a lot more blood scenes.
    • Again the socioeconomic groups that would watch this, are working class, I think no upper class people would find blood and guts appealing to their nature of watching this film.
    Representation:
    • The characters represented in this are your typical "damsel in distress" girls, very pretty and needy looking, not a scratch on their faces, buts cuts and bruises on their bodies.
    • Also the men represented in this are army and police forces, with guns, showing hierarchy, than the females and power like they aren't scared by the goings on in this film.
    • Also the "bad guy" is represented in a clowns mask, with his/her face hidden this shows hierarchy of all the characters as the true identity is not revealed leaving tension and scared characters not knowing who it is or what it is!
    Media Language:
    • The mise-en-scene of this film, is filmed in dark drained factorys isolated from the rest of the world, leaving characters vulnerable within their locaton.
    • Props used within mise-en-scene pay a big part to this film, such as the tasks and challenges each character goes through.
    • Costume that the characters where show their status well, girls in low cut tops, men in their official uniforms and the "bad guy" in a one piece dark cloak, leaving his whole in depth character a secret.
    • The editing of this film is done good, and has a fast pace movement with flashing shots, creating the tension of a horror.
    • The Cinematography of this film, has alot of different camera angles, when filming the females the camera angles are high and looking down on them, showing they are weak, the uniformed officers have camera angles, at the same height as them not giving showing that they are being looked down at or looked up too.
    • The diegetic sound in this is the girls screaming and crying puzzling where they are and what not.
    • The non-diegetic sound within this teaser trailer is the high pitched fast pacing music, building tension within the trailer, and once the music reaches the highest and quickest its a sudden slow thud, making you jump at the end.

    Planning and Research: Poster

Here I have had a recap session on photo-shop to get used to the program again. Also we looked at different materials within photo-shop to help create the theme for my horror teaser trailer.

    Planning and Research: Pitch

These are my individual ideas, that I thought we could include in our teaser trailer.

    Monday, 27 September 2010

    Research and Planning: certificates

For my horror teaser trailer i want the certificate to be a 15 or an 18 certificate! As it is a marketing tool, we want the movie to sell!
Especially if its a horror trailer, it cant be a standard 12 which some spooky, but not scary Harry Potter films are.

There are not many differences between 15 and 18 certificates but there are some! These include..

    18 Certificates
-The material is in breach of the criminal law
-There are more explicit images of sexual activity which cannot be justified by context
-any detailed portrayal of violent or dangerous acts, or of illegal drug use, which may cause harm to public health or morals

    15 Certificates
-The work as a whole must not endorse discriminatory language or behaviour
-Drug taking may be shown but the film as a whole must not promote or encourage drug misuse
-Strong threat and menace are permitted unless sadistic or sexualised.
-Dangerous behaviour (for example, hanging, suicide and self-harming) should not dwell on detail which could be copied
-There may be frequent use of strong language (for example, ‘fuck’). The strongest  terms (for example, ‘cunt’) may be acceptable if justified by the context
-Nudity may be allowed in a sexual context but without strong detail
-Sexual activity may be portrayed without strong detail
-Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable

    Research and Planning: The Test

    ">

This is a test that we have done in class, for our advanced media portfolio that we created around college. To see what we could do, when filming and editing. From only doing a small bit of filming last year as part of our coursework powerpoint, we haven't much experience. But we tried our best!
We worked in small groups of free, Haiesha Mistry and Megan Kelleher were in my group.
We created this film from only a small story board that we planned out, overall we chose to do a comedy chase. The story behind the comedy chase was that, we were late for college but when we finally arrived at the classroom we were way to early.
So basically Haiesha, Meg and i, took our hand held camera and tripod and began the filming.
We filmed the comedy sequence from many different angles just like you would see in any film, i personally thought this was the easiest bit, then came the editing. We uploaded our video and half of it was cut out, we added music and sound effects and edits to complete our final production.

What i personally think we could have improved was filming from more angles, although i said filming seemed the easiest part, when it came down to editing there wasnt many clips to edit from, alot more angles would of helped.

    Research and Planning: Genre

To start the project coursework of making my movie teaser trailer, poster and magazine cover. I am going to research a few genres, to give me an idea of what the consist of and how they are portrayed, that i could possibly use.

    ACTION Films
The genre of action films mainly include fast moving camera shots, to create a feel of a chase or that something dangerous is about to happen. The camera angles show off a hierarchy within the characters, to show who is in charge throughout this action film. Most action films consist of car chases, either with cops or with an enemy, and huge explosions -with lots of sound effects! The characters that are usually portrayed in an action film are strong dominant males, as the main character, usually a stereotypical damsel in distress woman, and/or a child in need of help. Also there is definitely the bad guys and the cops, it wouldn't be an action film without them. The film plot is usually good guy bad guy, and bad guy wants to do something which will put innocent lives at risk, so good guy saves the day and the gets the girl.

    ROMANCE Films
The genre of romantic/love films include long shots and close ups for those heartwarming moments. The Characters involved are, loved up male or female role, a person set out to destroy it, for example an ex or mother in law. The film plot is basically the same in any love film, a female or male role, mainly female, to be stereotypical. Falls in love with a person they meet things go well for the pair then a twist happens throughout the middle of the film and they fall out. But by the end of the film all is well and everything is happy again! Those are the traditional 'Love Stories'. Many have love throughout and sad endings, but still the main focus is of LOVE!

    HORROR Films
The genre of horror films, consist of dark scenery and puzzling inquisitive story lines. The characters invovled in a horror, are usually bad guy who wants to hurt people and the good people, who get trapped in the murderers cycle and only a few people out of the group of good people survive the trauma they go through. The plot within most horror stories are within the beginning someone gets killed, and thats what everyone then talks about as you are introduced to the main characters. Then the bad guy is usually someone they know or seen almost everyday in their lives, and they play mind games with the characters. A group of friends get involved with the bad guy and a certain number of friends get killed and some survive.

    SCI-FI Films
The genre of Sci-fi films, consist of alot of technology being used, with alot of imagination. The characters that are usually in Sci-fi's are, the proffessor or geeky person who has researched the Sci-fi life. The hero male role, the damsel in distress, the bad guy and extraterrestrial characters, good/bad. The plot in Sci-fi films differ from one another but main ones are, its either a human that uses a the extraterrestrial to be evil, or the extraterrestrial is evil itself and wants to destroy earth. Then the proffessor/geek knows a way in which to destroy and defeat their plan but hasnt the courage and in comes the hero, again like action saves the day and gets the girl usually. But somewhere within this film there is a twist involving the technology.
