Planning and Research: Trailer Analysis

Genre:
  • The Genre of this teaser trailer is a horror. This is quite clearly shown with the use of dramatic scary music, the dark camera shots, the angles, and with all the shots flashing from one to another so quick that it makes you jump.
Narrative:
  • There isn't much narrative in this trailer clip, but the narrative isn't necessary as its more about watching what happens, and noticing something on a shot, rather than listening to someone explain, it creates more of a scary tension.
Audience:
  • This trailer interacts with the audience more than others, as there is a clip of an audience getting scared and a question aimed at us the audience saying "In 2009 you demanded it".
  • The target audience for this film is late teenagers and young adults, as its a 15, teenagers will be more interested into watching it, as they are old enough to get into the film, also not a lot of older people will find it appealing to them.
  • I think mixed gendered people will watch this, I can see more boys than girls watching it, as I believe that most girls would find it too scary, but myself being a girl and a big fan of Horrors this was right up my street.
  • Lifestyle and socioeconomic groups this applies to is, working class people, not your upper class.
Representation:
  • In this trailer, the characters represented are a typical family in a family home, but within the trailer, a silhouette image of a "devil" like woman is over powering a baby and a dog, and also pushes a large male towards a camera.
  • Within this horror, typical character roles are not portrayed as there is no damsel in distress, but a male in distress if you like as it is an overpowered woman as the main role.
Media Language:
  • The mise-en-scene of this trailer is strictly filmed within one location, a house. Such a simple location where everybody and anybody could film, but takes an imaginative mind to make something so creative.
  • The editing of this trailer is good, as it flicks from one shot to another, and as the film is about having video camera around the house to watch for anything scary, and the editing techniques used, are fuzzy TV clips, to hook you in more.
  • The cinematography is strictly limited in this film, as its suppost to look as realistic as possible, with the cameras being placed around the house in top corners of the room, that's all the angles you can see from, but it also is like your looking down on the "devil" from heaven.
  • The diegetic sound involved in this clip is the noises you can see coming off of the characters, such as when the male gets thrown towards the camera and it falls you hear the bang, also when the dog barks.
  • The non-diegetic sound is the scary music and the fuzzy TV noises.

Genre:
  • The Genre for this teaser trailer is Horror, you can tell this as the high pitch fast pacing music builds up tension throughout this trailer, and the flashing images of different shots within the film, shows that its a horror.
Narrative:
  • The only narrative within this trailer is a scream from a typical damsel in distress at the end of the teaser trailer.
Audience:
  • I think the target audience for this trailer, is 18 year old's up to early 30's, because this trailer is an 18, most teenagers aged like 14 15, will no they are too young to watch therefore might not appeal to them as much as a 15 horror, and i believe it  could be for most adults up to early 30's as it a psychological film and gets you thinking, you have to watch everything to understand, so no hiding behind a pillow.
  • I believe mixed gendered people will watch this film but with this film I believe A LOT more lads would prefer this type of horror than girls, as its more gory, and has a lot more blood scenes.
  • Again the socioeconomic groups that would watch this, are working class, I think no upper class people would find blood and guts appealing to their nature of watching this film.
Representation:
  • The characters represented in this are your typical "damsel in distress" girls, very pretty and needy looking, not a scratch on their faces, buts cuts and bruises on their bodies.
  • Also the men represented in this are army and police forces, with guns, showing hierarchy, than the females and power like they aren't scared by the goings on in this film.
  • Also the "bad guy" is represented in a clowns mask, with his/her face hidden this shows hierarchy of all the characters as the true identity is not revealed leaving tension and scared characters not knowing who it is or what it is!
Media Language:
  • The mise-en-scene of this film, is filmed in dark drained factorys isolated from the rest of the world, leaving characters vulnerable within their locaton.
  • Props used within mise-en-scene pay a big part to this film, such as the tasks and challenges each character goes through.
  • Costume that the characters where show their status well, girls in low cut tops, men in their official uniforms and the "bad guy" in a one piece dark cloak, leaving his whole in depth character a secret.
  • The editing of this film is done good, and has a fast pace movement with flashing shots, creating the tension of a horror.
  • The Cinematography of this film, has alot of different camera angles, when filming the females the camera angles are high and looking down on them, showing they are weak, the uniformed officers have camera angles, at the same height as them not giving showing that they are being looked down at or looked up too.
  • The diegetic sound in this is the girls screaming and crying puzzling where they are and what not.
  • The non-diegetic sound within this teaser trailer is the high pitched fast pacing music, building tension within the trailer, and once the music reaches the highest and quickest its a sudden slow thud, making you jump at the end.

Planning and Research: Poster

Here I have had a recap session on photo-shop to get used to the program again. Also we looked at different materials within photo-shop to help create the theme for my horror teaser trailer.

Planning and Research: Pitch

These are my individual ideas, that I thought we could include in our teaser trailer.

Research and Planning: certificates

For my horror teaser trailer i want the certificate to be a 15 or an 18 certificate! As it is a marketing tool, we want the movie to sell!
Especially if its a horror trailer, it cant be a standard 12 which some spooky, but not scary Harry Potter films are.

There are not many differences between 15 and 18 certificates but there are some! These include..

18 Certificates
-The material is in breach of the criminal law
-There are more explicit images of sexual activity which cannot be justified by context
-any detailed portrayal of violent or dangerous acts, or of illegal drug use, which may cause harm to public health or morals

15 Certificates
-The work as a whole must not endorse discriminatory language or behaviour
-Drug taking may be shown but the film as a whole must not promote or encourage drug misuse
-Strong threat and menace are permitted unless sadistic or sexualised.
-Dangerous behaviour (for example, hanging, suicide and self-harming) should not dwell on detail which could be copied
-There may be frequent use of strong language (for example, ‘fuck’). The strongest  terms (for example, ‘cunt’) may be acceptable if justified by the context
-Nudity may be allowed in a sexual context but without strong detail
-Sexual activity may be portrayed without strong detail
-Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable

Research and Planning: The Test

">

This is a test that we have done in class, for our advanced media portfolio that we created around college. To see what we could do, when filming and editing. From only doing a small bit of filming last year as part of our coursework powerpoint, we haven't much experience. But we tried our best!
We worked in small groups of free, Haiesha Mistry and Megan Kelleher were in my group.
We created this film from only a small story board that we planned out, overall we chose to do a comedy chase. The story behind the comedy chase was that, we were late for college but when we finally arrived at the classroom we were way to early.
So basically Haiesha, Meg and i, took our hand held camera and tripod and began the filming.
We filmed the comedy sequence from many different angles just like you would see in any film, i personally thought this was the easiest bit, then came the editing. We uploaded our video and half of it was cut out, we added music and sound effects and edits to complete our final production.

What i personally think we could have improved was filming from more angles, although i said filming seemed the easiest part, when it came down to editing there wasnt many clips to edit from, alot more angles would of helped.

Research and Planning: Genre

To start the project coursework of making my movie teaser trailer, poster and magazine cover. I am going to research a few genres, to give me an idea of what the consist of and how they are portrayed, that i could possibly use.

ACTION Films
The genre of action films mainly include fast moving camera shots, to create a feel of a chase or that something dangerous is about to happen. The camera angles show off a hierarchy within the characters, to show who is in charge throughout this action film. Most action films consist of car chases, either with cops or with an enemy, and huge explosions -with lots of sound effects! The characters that are usually portrayed in an action film are strong dominant males, as the main character, usually a stereotypical damsel in distress woman, and/or a child in need of help. Also there is definitely the bad guys and the cops, it wouldn't be an action film without them. The film plot is usually good guy bad guy, and bad guy wants to do something which will put innocent lives at risk, so good guy saves the day and the gets the girl.

ROMANCE Films
The genre of romantic/love films include long shots and close ups for those heartwarming moments. The Characters involved are, loved up male or female role, a person set out to destroy it, for example an ex or mother in law. The film plot is basically the same in any love film, a female or male role, mainly female, to be stereotypical. Falls in love with a person they meet things go well for the pair then a twist happens throughout the middle of the film and they fall out. But by the end of the film all is well and everything is happy again! Those are the traditional 'Love Stories'. Many have love throughout and sad endings, but still the main focus is of LOVE!

HORROR Films
The genre of horror films, consist of dark scenery and puzzling inquisitive story lines. The characters invovled in a horror, are usually bad guy who wants to hurt people and the good people, who get trapped in the murderers cycle and only a few people out of the group of good people survive the trauma they go through. The plot within most horror stories are within the beginning someone gets killed, and thats what everyone then talks about as you are introduced to the main characters. Then the bad guy is usually someone they know or seen almost everyday in their lives, and they play mind games with the characters. A group of friends get involved with the bad guy and a certain number of friends get killed and some survive.

SCI-FI Films
The genre of Sci-fi films, consist of alot of technology being used, with alot of imagination. The characters that are usually in Sci-fi's are, the proffessor or geeky person who has researched the Sci-fi life. The hero male role, the damsel in distress, the bad guy and extraterrestrial characters, good/bad. The plot in Sci-fi films differ from one another but main ones are, its either a human that uses a the extraterrestrial to be evil, or the extraterrestrial is evil itself and wants to destroy earth. Then the proffessor/geek knows a way in which to destroy and defeat their plan but hasnt the courage and in comes the hero, again like action saves the day and gets the girl usually. But somewhere within this film there is a twist involving the technology.
